Cancelling a subscription with a pending one-time item or reward no longer gets stuck

RetentionBilling & Payments

Some subscriptions carry a pending change tied to their next order, such as a one-time add-on item, a streak reward, or a line Shopify could no longer fulfill that was removed from the upcoming order. Previously, cancelling one of these subscriptions could get stuck instead of completing.

Cancelling a subscription with any of these pending changes now works from every surface, including the customer portal and the Shopify customer-account extension. The cancellation clears the pending change as part of completing, so a subscriber no longer has to wait for it to resolve on its own or contact support to cancel.

The fix also corrects how these attempts count against a contract's daily change allowance. An attempt that stops before the change is actually applied no longer spends from that budget; it's tracked separately instead. Once a change has gone through, it counts toward the allowance even if a later step then reports an error. Previously, a subscriber (or support agent) retrying a stuck cancellation in this state could burn through the daily allowance on failed attempts alone, leaving no room for the change that was actually needed that day.

Nothing changes for a subscription without a pending one-time item, reward, or removed line; cancellation works exactly as before.
